Resolutions Worth Keeping

Change – We all love that word. We may all come from different lifestyles, varying family backgrounds, and segregated beliefs, yet, there is one thing that unites us all, the need for change. We expect change from others, and quite frankly, they expect us to reciprocate the same thing. We’ve all had disappointments in life, and more often than not, we happen to point our finger to others when something goes wrong. The thing is, we only acknowledge our very own need for change or improvement once someone calls us out for the things that we should be working on, and most of the time, we realize they are right. The bad thing about this is we aren’t even open-minded to do this on a daily basis; instead, we opt to practice improving ourselves only after every New Year’s celebration. People call this the New Year’s Resolution, a list of “self-improvement” goals as long as a millionaire’s shopping list during the holiday season. Indeed, we may have our own list of dos and don’ts for the New Year, but year after year, our list tends to fade away into non-existence, with us forgetting our responsibility to improve for the better.

You may ask, “How on earth can I gather the courage to push through with my New Year’s Resolutions?” The answer? Stick with only a few items on your list. Now, that may sound counterproductive at first, but hear us out. Wouldn’t it be more efficient to concentrate on a few things first then succeed, rather than to focus on many things, thus making you lose momentum overall? It’s just like the typical process within our educational system, you have to start learning the basics, the ABCs and the one plus ones, after that you may proceed with the elementary lessons, then the high school curriculum, all the way towards the complicated lessons of your college years. Keeping up with your New Year’s Resolution is basically the same thing. Take it one step at a time.

Now, it’s only appropriate for you to pick out the most important improvements to focus on for the New Year. While there are many things to choose from, there are a few which demands the most attention and devotion of your time. For starters, here are just a few of them.

  1. Eating healthier this coming 2021
Are you feeling a bit down? Drowsy? Feeling as if all the energy has gone out of your system? Well, it might be due to the lack of nutrients in your body. Believe it or not, the food we consume may affect our mood, physical strength, and even our emotions in a way that we never expect it to. A recent study from Harvard states that “multiple studies have found a correlation between a diet high in refined sugars and impaired brain function — and even a worsening of symptoms of mood disorders, such as depression.” If you think that’s bad, just try to recall how often you’d chomp down on chocolates and doughnuts. If the answer is “very often” then you may need to tone down on your desserts. Implementing effective diet plans require insurmountable effort, preparation, and motivation. Seeing as this is related to your very own health, you may need to take this seriously, after all, an unhealthy body may lead to unhealthy results towards your career and personal life. Try to start your year with a diet plan. Sort out your meals each week, focusing more on fruits and vegetables, rather than sweets and carbs. Feel free to add exercise to your diet plan as well. Body moments and proper diet goes hand in hand.
  2. Interacting with positive people this coming 2021
Of course, it can’t be helped; there will always be someone who will rain on your parade. There will always be someone who will try to ruin your day, however, your reaction towards these negativity will yield multiple results. If you choose to look at the brighter side of life, you may push through without any hitch. As much as possible, deal and interact with people who may inspire and motivate you towards positive habits and activities. It isn’t every day that you meet these types of people, so feel free to analyze every personality that you’d come across for the year. If you happen to have friends who are already a catalyst of good in you then congratulations! That’s already the first step. Now, you just need to add a few more to your repertoire of inspirations and (possibly) spiritual advisors. The reason why you might have been too irritative these past few years may be due to the fact that you’ve been in the presence of people who often complain or whine about their life, never looking at the bright side of things. Avoid being with “Debby Downers,” instead, opt for the “Angels” of the society.
  3. Try to organize things better this coming 2021
Indeed, 2020 was a mess. After a few years’ time, we will look back at this year and ask the question, “Did those things really happen?” Between the pandemic and the economic shifts, we’ve all been taken aback by celebrities passing away, by rampant storms, by stories of loss of livelihood, and so on. You may have been affected by these instances and honestly, no one can blame you. As a matter of fact, we’ve all been the shocked and awkward passengers of this crazy rollercoaster ride known as 2020, and it really made its mark on everyone. But the thing about this year is that it somehow showed us all the bad things that we can do something about. It isn’t just about bringing in the bad occurrences for the sake of having a significant happening for this year. No, it’s all about making us realize that we, as human beings, as proud Filipinos, as strong people of the globe can do something about our troubles. If you happen to find yourself always being disorganized, may it be with your time, your schedule, your tasks, your accessories, etc. then 2021 may be the perfect opportunity for you to bring about change in your life. Learn to organize things better. Start with the small things. Organize the contents of your bag, move on to your drawers and organize the placement of your freshly laundered clothes, organize your schedule, arrange your time and activities. Not only would it help clear your mind, it would also help you form a habit, a great habit of setting things in place for you to easily find them after. Organize your stuff, then it would take a domino effect, all the way towards organizing your daily activities. Take the first step and watch the magic unfold.

All of these resolutions are definitely worth following, marking the new beginning that is 2021. However, one resolution would stand out from rest, and that is the resolve to save up for a brighter future.
