Lhuillier eyed as next PHILTA president

MANILA, Philippines — Businessman and sports patron Jean-Henri Lhuillier is being eyed to replace Salvador “Buddy” Andrada as president of the Philippine Tennis Association (PHILTA).

This comes after Andrada announced that he will step down as the PHILTA president following claims that the association has experienced stagnant growth due to the lack of concrete programs the past few years.

PHILTA has likewise been mired by leadership disputes, and stakeholders are calling for changes to improve Philippine tennis.

Lhuillier, president and CEO of Cebuana Lhuillier, comes well recommended by some major figures in Philippine tennis.

“We thank Mr. Andrada for his decision to step down and thus pave the way for an orderly transition in PHILTA’s leadership,” said Bobby Castro, president and CEO of Palawan Pawnshop.

Former PHILTA regional vice-president John Pages, who helped organized five Davis Cup ties in Cebu City, said he recommends Lhuillier for the position.

“I know Jean Henri and you cannot find someone with more enthusiasm and passion for tennis.”

For his part, Philippine Sports (PSC) Commissioner William “Butch” Ramirez previously released a statement backing Lhuillier, whom he called “a genuine lover and supporter of the sport of tennis.”

Palawan Pawnshop together with Cebuana Lhuillier earlier bolted out from PHILTA’s calendar and announced a unified ranking system.

Tournament organizers and sponsors soon followed their move.

Lhuillierr has previously expressed his intent to run for the presidency but was denied the opportunity when Andrada did not open the position during the elections last February 8.

He said that should he be elected as next president of the association, his main agenda is to improve the quality and popularity of the sport in the country.

“If given the chance to lead, I’ll ensure that long-term programs—that will promote the popularity of the sport, enhance the rankings of our national players as well as discover and harness fresh talents, will be in place.  I’ll also make sure that the association will be more inclusive.  I’m confident that with the support of all stakeholders, we can achieve something special for Philippine tennis in the coming years.  I’ve always believed that tennis is a sport that Filipinos can be at par with the world’s best,” said Lhuillier.

Lhuillier’s long list of support to Philippine tennis started way back in 1994 when he organized and funded a Men’s tennis open. He has since been  the team manager and sponsor of the Philippine Davis Cup team for  more than 10 years  and supports the international campaigns of the country’s top players such as Treat Huey, Ruben Gonzales, Francis Casey Alcantara and Katharina Lehnert.

He has likewise been sponsoring top local tournaments such as the annual PCA Open and was instrumental in bringing international tournaments the past few years such as the ATP Challenger and the ITF and ATF Men’s Futures.

The businessman also spearheads the long-standing Cebuana Lhuillier Age Group Tennis, which has been ongoing for the past 11 years and has helped produce top national and collegiate players in the country.

Statement of Jean Henri Lhuillier on the PHILTA Snap Elections

I came to the Philippine Tennis Association (PHILTA) elections today with a great hope of having a unified association. In a meeting between the International Tennis Federation (ITF) president, PHILTA Board and the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) last October 2016, Col. (ret.) Salvador Andrada agreed to step down January of 2017 which he recommitted in the board meeting  last December 14. It was on the same day I signified my intention to run for the PHILTA presidency with the vision of making PHILTA a world-class association that will be more inclusive, and will produce world-class tennis players.  So it was highly irregular for Col. Andrada to back-track on his announcement to step-down from the presidency. I would like to reiterate the highly questionable nature of col. Andrada’s assumption of The PHILTA presidency:

  • When former President Edwin Olivares relinquished the PHILTA Presidency as a requisite of taking public office, the proper line of succession should have installed the then Vice President Randy Villanueva.
  • Instead, a snap election was conducted contrary to association rules.
  • This snap election was held without observing the prescribed duration of time and prior notice.

These circumstances were actually violative of PHILTA by-laws and renders col. Andrada’s PHILTA presidency invalid and illegitimate. It is precisely for these reasons that the new elections for PHILTA President was slated-through the mediation of the POC & ITF. The POC has in fact been notified that the elections are to be held for the PHILTA presidency.

Because of the foregoing, we have decided not to participate in today’s PHILTA elections which actually covers only the Vice Presidential post and lower positions.

My group is keeping our options open and we’ll take it day by day but for sure, I will continue to support tennis in the Philippines as it is my passion.

The country’s communication channels were not left unnoticed as the Cebuana Lhuillier Facebook page was given the Bronze award under the Best Facebook Fan page or Group, and an internal video series called The JHL Show also won Bronze for Video Internal/Employee Communications.

This edition of the IBA received more than 3,800 nominations from 60 countries such as USA, Japan, Qatar, Spain, and Australia. Some of the other winning companies include AT&T, DHL Express, LG Electronics and Unilever.

Meanwhile, at the Golden Bridge Awards, having added outlets within and outside the Philippines and having further diversified its portfolio of products and services, Cebuana Lhuillier was given the Gold award for Business Expansion of the Year. Its Search for the Happiest Pinoy was also awarded with a Bronze recognition for CSR Program of the Year, while Mr. Lhuillier, having led the company to new heights, was honored with the Gold award for CEO of the Year.

PHI Davis Cup squad prevails over Indonesians

Ruben Gonzales cut down a hard-fighting David Agung Susanto of Indonesia with a clinical, 6-2, 6-3, 6-4 beating Sunday as Cebuana Lhuillier-Philippines Davis Cup team won the tie, 4-1, at Philippine Columbian Association indoor courts.
Gonzales, 31, was in full control of the match as he posted his 10th Davis Cup victory in 15 matches played, giving the Philippines 3-1 edge in the Asia/Oceania Group 2 tie.He scored his second win this weekend after beating Aditya Hari Sasongko (6-2, 6-2, 6-4) following the sorry loss of Alberto Lim Jr. to Susanto (3-6, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1, 1-1 (retired). Later in the day, Alberto Lim Jr., put the finishing touches after he drubbed Anthony Susanto, 7-5, 6-3, in the non-bearing fifth match to complete a 4-1 win for the Philippines.“It was good effort. I think it was high level I mean he (Susanto) was playing three matches and I did a good effort. Good match and great win for Philippines,” said Gonzales.
Lim Jr., was playing Sasongko in the dead rubber at press time in the tie sponsored by the Philippine Sports Commission, Babolat and Cebuana Lhuillier.Team manager Jean Henri Lhuillier praised the team which is eyeing to go back to Group 1.“The players showed passion and a big heart. It’s going to be a lot of hardwork but with the efforts they showed we’ll get eventually there,” said Lhuillier.
Now the Philippines is waiting for the winner between Thailand and Kuwait for its semifinal opponent. The country’s premier doubles players Treat Huey and Francis Casey Alcantara gave the Philippines a thorough 6-2, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Susanto and Sunu-Wahyu Trijati for a 2-1 lead Saturday. The Philippines non-playing captain Karl Santamaria said the country now has “the pieces to get back into the big boys club.”

Susanto, 25, put up a gallant stand by breaking Gonzales for the first time, tying the third set at 2-2 and then consolidating it for a 3-2 lead. But Gonzales held at love and then broke the Indonesian with a brilliant passing shot for 4-3. The Filipino next held serve via sliding drop shot that thrilled the gallery before allowing Susanto to hold.

Gonzales then cranked it up in the 10th game, served and volleying to force the Indonesian to hit long for the winning point.
