Money Remittance 101: Secure Ways to Send Money to Loved Ones in the Philippines

1

There are numerous ways in letting our loved ones know how much they mean to us. Sometimes, we express it through words, yet most of the time; we let our actions speak for us. For OFWs, it is never easy being far from the people that matter to them, spending countless hours at work, trying their best in fighting the loneliness felt being in a foreign land. In spite of it all, no happiness can ever amount to that of an OFW, especially when they receive their monthly pay, as this would only mean they can finally send their love back in the Philippines.

Yes, money remittance is a common activity done by OFWs as this is one of the major ways in which they may provide cash to their loved ones back at home. For the most part, it is safe and secure, but there are still those who do not have the best interest at heart and are willing to take advantage of others, OFW or not, who are not too familiar with the safety measures in sending money to the Philippines. No need to worry though, as we prepared a few important tips to help you have a safer transaction in your future remittances:

1. Research on the remittance company.

Prevention is always better than the cure. What better way to prevent remittance scams than by doing your own research on the remittance company itself. Does it have good reviews? What are your fellow OFW’s experiences when transacting with them? These are important factors to consider as, remember, it is your hard-earned money that you would be trusting them with, and a company with little to no good reviews at all may be too suspicious to handle your transactions.

12. Never send money to unfamiliar people.

There may come a time in which you would receive calls or text messages from an unknown number, claiming to be your loved one or relative, hoping to borrow money while providing you with their account details. First of all, never trust an unknown number. Validate with your other relatives (through secured lines) if they had indeed changed their contact details. This is a new form of scam commonly targeting OFWs; hence, one should be careful at all times.

3. Be cautious in providing the control number.

As with all money remittance processes, the procedure usually ends with the sender texting the receiver the control number, so they may prove that the cash is indeed intended for them. This is convenient, yet would also require caution as texting the control number to another person by mistake may cause the money to be received by the wrong person. Be sure to always double-check both the control number and the contact details where you’ll be sending the said validation numbers to.

These are just a few pointers to ensure that your next transaction will be safe and hassle-free. Familiarizing yourself with the remittance process and staying vigilant throughout the procedure may help you avoid scams and at the same time, enable your loved ones to receive your remittances in no time.

So, you finally receive your monthly pay, yet have no idea who to trust your remittance transactions with. Well worry no more, as we at Cebuana Lhuillier offer our Pera Padala Service, an easy, quick, and safe way to send and receive money. With more than 2,000 branches nationwide and accredited international partners, this money transfer service is made available to clients within and outside the Philippines. Visit your nearest Cebuana Lhuillier branch now – we assure a fast, easy and secure transaction.

Different Ways to Send Remittance to the Philippines

1

When OFWs receive their monthly pay, more often than not they immediately send a portion of it to their family back in the Philippines. Such may be a simple act of giving; however, it goes a long way, considering the high prices in the markets and the ever-increasing monthly charges in bills. There are also those who rely heavily on these monthly allowances for their education, which is why it’s very important to receive it on time. The worst case scenario would be to require cash due to emergency, a circumstance that none would ever want to experience. With these, quickness of the process and transaction is a key feature that all OFWs are looking for when it comes to money remittances. In reality, people want to know what are the actual ways in which one may send money to their loved ones. Here is a list of remittance processes, with the last being the best option:

1. Online Money Transfer

Technology enabled us to stay connected with our loved ones, even if they’re halfway across the globe. Social media is a perfect example of this advancement, which is why our beloved OFWs never feel the same loneliness that they had felt before, as daily video calls and chat conversations make it seem as if their loved ones are just in the next room, waiting for a knock anytime for a warm smile and well-felt embrace. The same may be said for money transfer, as it is easy to send money online with just a few clicks. This is fast and convenient, and depending on your internet connection, they may receive the cash in a few minutes. However, take note that such has a critical con: hackers. Information you put online is at risk due to people who do not have your best interest at heart. When doing online money transfer, hackers may phish for your account information, enabling them to receive the amount rather than your loved one. Such a scary reality that countless people had already gone through.

2. Bank Remittance

Another seemingly convenient way to send money to your loved ones, whether by check or by cash. Yes, banks are well-guarded and contain some of the most advanced money transfer systems as well. The employees are uniformed, signifying their discipline and they are definitely polite during the whole process. While this may seem an almost perfect way to send your cash, take note that such also carry a negative con, one which is most critical when it comes to transactions: time. Banks are usually riddled with long lines, eating away your time. Aside from that, bank remittances may take a few hours to reflect on your loved one’s account, even days if you decide to deposit with a check, and that is time wasted, considering your loved one’s urgent need of the money.

10 Budget-Friendly Filipino Noche Buena Favorites

We Filipinos love to eat. Whatever the occasion, a personal party or a big time feast, the centerpiece of our celebration would probably be the buffet right at our dining table. Christmas season is no different. We are entitled to choose our own meals, tinted with our top secret recipes just to impress our visitors for the Christmas Eve dinner. And no matter the cost, as long as our delicacies generate the expected smiles from our guests, we are definitely smiling along with them, thinking to ourselves, “We had succeeded!” Yes, great food is one way towards other people’s hearts, however, such may only be the case if we managed to mix the right ingredients, and sometimes the right ingredients would cost too much. Well, in such case, keep your worries away, as we had prepared a list of the Top 10 Budget-Friendly Filipino Noche Buena Favorites:

1. Bibingka – A familiar treat among Filipinos, this variety of a sweet steamed rice cake has strong heritage significance from our rich history. Just as our great, great grandparents enjoyed having this on their dinner table, so do their cheerful descendants who are avid fans of this delicacy as well. No need to go to fancy restaurants for this, you may find this treat right outside the church during early morning masses leading up to Christmas day, with the price usually ranging from P35 – P50.

2. Fruit Salad – If you want your budget done right, you have to do it yourself. Food that is prepared by your own hands can give you an advantage, especially if you’re already familiar with the preparation process. The more you know about the exact amount of ingredients, the fewer mistakes you’ll make in purchasing them. This is true when it comes to fruit salad. You see, a true expert in preparing one knows how much condensed milk or cream, canned fruits, and additive syrup he/she would have to put in to achieve just the right amount of sweetness. The whole ingredient ranges from P300-P450. Choose your ingredients wisely.

3. Puto Bumbong – Similar to bibingka, this may also be found outside the church during early morning masses leading up to Christmas day. If you want variety, in terms of desserts, you may have to include this one as it features the stickiness that bibingka lacks. The sprinkled sugar and coconut bits add a majestic flavor to this already delicious treat.

4. Queso de Bola – This is one treat that every Filipino family should have on their table at Christmas Eve. Not to be mistaken as a mere traditional display, this rounded cheese made more appearances at Christmas than some of your aunts and uncles, who mysteriously disappear every Yuletide Season (hmm, we all wonder why). The elegant taste adds a smooth, salty variety to your meal. Don’t let the appearance intimidate you. Yes, some are truly expensive. However, if you would persevere, you would surely find a grocery selling certain brands of this delicacy for a much affordable price; sometimes, even buy 1 take 1.

5. Embutido – Tired of hearing your visitors complain about how you had served them with cold food? Worry no more, as this delicacy may be served in either cold or hot temperature, depending on your preparation. As our own version of meatloaf, this favorite is a must-have on the table, exploding with different flavors due to the variety of filling in the middle. This is also affordable, as some are even sold in foil-wrapped bundles, having enough for every guest at the Christmas Eve dinner.

6. Leche Flan – Another delight that may be served as either hot or cold. This desert may be purchased or prepared. Regardless, you would be able to get more value for your money, as price of this delicacy is within reach, one tub us usually priced P35 – P50, depending on the size. Discounts are also given if bought in bundles.

7. Filipino Style Spaghetti – What Filipino gathering would be complete without spaghetti? It may seem strange for foreigners, but our love for this delicacy never fades, whether at birthdays, weddings, or even blow outs. Recently, groceries started selling pastas with tomato sauce and other needed ingredients in plastic-wrapped baskets. This offer usually appears during the yuletide season, indicating that stores indeed study their customers. The best thing about this is it also comes in a reduced price. Imagine getting all of the ingredients for less, unlike buying them one by one in which you would likely never save any amount by the time you exit the supermarket.

8. Lumpiang Ubod (Lumpiang Sariwa) – This is another one of those masterpieces, not due to its appearance, rather because it is made by your very hands. Yes, you purchase a few to save up preparation time, however, where’s the fun in that? Besides, purchasing the ingredients may help you think wisely about the exact amounts to be bought. The right amount of vegetables and sauce mix that you can buy for its preparation may make the difference between getting the right amounts and spending less, or buying more than what you need and spending a lot in the process.

9. Barbecue – Notice a certain pattern in the list? There are numerous times in which you may be able to save more only if the food to be served is prepared by your own hands, meaning, you would spend more if you were to buy ready-to-eat meals. Again, this is due to the fact that you would be able to buy the right amount of ingredients and avoid overspending at the same time. Barbecue, whether pork or chicken, may not be too pricey if you know the right delicious parts to be bought. Some pork parts are cheaper than the other but less tasty, this may be remedied with the proper marinating. Ketchup and soy sauce, with a touch of citrus and garlic definitely adds to the taste. Brush the pork/chicken while being grilled to add a tender coating of sweet marinate, even after pulling out from the charcoal.

10 BudgetFriendly Filipino Noche Buena Favorites3

10. Kastanyas – “Chestnuts roasting on an open fire…” – Isn’t that the opening lyrics of a famous Christmas song? Yes, it is. As the song clearly signifies, nuts are a traditional part of our Yuletide treats. Here in the Philippines, it is identified by its hard outer shell, which then softens as you expose it to heat. The result is a holiday snack sold per gram or kilo, depending on the current market price. Nonetheless, it’s another must have on the dinner table.

So, you are prepping up your budget to prepare the said delicacies, but you had only counted enough as the other half of your expenditures would be allotted for the gifts to be given this holiday season. You need a few extras to survive this Yuletide season. Well, worry no more, as Cebuana Lhuillier offers its Pawning Service. They lead the pawning industry by offering safety and the highest appraisal rate in the industry in its more than 1,800 branches nationwide. Accepting an array of items, from jewelry to gadgets, as collaterals, the company’s core business has evolved with the needs of its clients. So what are you waiting for? 5 Money-Saving, Stress-Free Christmas Shopping Tips

Christmas season is among us and there are already countless holiday promos in malls as of late. This has caused many to rush to their nearest brand stalls and purchase to their hearts content. However, as delightful it may sound to shop for items for a much lower price, the hassle comes with the crowd. Shopping in a mall with countless sale offers may prove too much of a struggle, as people have the same idea as you, and the huge crowds may make it difficult for you to walk through the aisles. There are countless viral videos online which show many people getting hurt due to stampedes and panicking shoppers, worrying they’ll get the least from discount offers if people get ahead of them in the line. With these, we had listed a few money-saving, stress-free Christmas shopping tips to protect you, our avid readers from deceiving offers and the hostile environment, which are the discount-infested shopping malls:

1. Plan ahead of time.

Do you already know what you need to purchase? If you’re going to a crowded shopping mall with an incomplete shopping list, then you might as well just waste valuable time. Remember that going through a crowd is exhausting, and that going back and forth due to unbought and forgotten presents may take too much time and energy. Plan out your list as early as possible and route your direction within the store isles (if you’re familiar with the mall structure). Take it from us, you’ll have more time to prepare for the Christmas Eve dinner after.

2. Make your own presents.

Why waste time and money going through a crowded mall when you can just make your own presents? Hand-crafted miniature models, self-made paintings, and hand-knitted sweaters will surely bring a smile to your loved ones more than expensive brands may do. Prepare your own gifts and save big without going through any hassle.

3. If others can do it, ask for their help.

Bustling in the city malls and spending your own money in one go may be ineffective, especially if you’re going through a financial drought. What would be your best alternative then? In the Philippines, there are such things as “Bayanihan,” or the well-appreciated gesture of help and assistance from our family, neighbor and friends. In this way, why not ask a loved one to buy for you a few gifts from your Christmas list? You may pay them in full right after, or perhaps pay up in installments, rendering it as a form of gift from them. This may seem like asking too much from a family or friend, but there are times in which you definitely have a valid reason, perhaps needing to get away from stress and they will surely understand your reason for avoiding it all this holiday season.

4. Recycle old, unused items from your home.

We’re not talking about furniture, rather well-kept appliances that you may not have utilized due to your fear of high electricity bills. An unused iron or rice cooker may be a great gift for your relatives. No need to spend much for wrapping as well, you may decorate a few layers of bond paper with Christmas patterns and redecorate with a cheap ribbon to top it off.

5 MoneySaving StressFree Christmas Shopping Tips3

5. Be aware of discounts online.

The best way to get real-time information on available vouchers and sales within your favorite malls is to check their official social media page or website. This is related to the very first tip in this list, as you would be able to plan ahead of time, preparing you for any possible holiday rush or panic.

So, you had already allotted enough for your shopping list, but forgot a few more acquaintances in the process. To your surprise, you may need more amount than what you had listed, just to make amends for the sudden change in your budget. Well, worry no more as Cebuana Lhuiller offers its Happy Loan Service. It is a multi-purpose loan amounting to Php 5,000 offered to any individual who is employed, self-employed, student, or a remittance beneficiary. Cebuana Lhuillier financial literacy program yields over 15,000 graduates

Cebuana Lhuillier, the country’s leading microfinancial company, has already educated and helped more than 16,000 Filipinos through its financial literacy program. Successfully completing the company’s free financial literacy education program called CebuanAsenso Negoserye, the graduates are now considered better informed on financial management.

The CebuanAsenso Negoserye campaign, which was rolled out nationwide early this year, aims to promote financial inclusion and help inform the public about proper management of finances, whether it is for personal purposes or for small, medium, or micro businesses. It has attracted 19,069 participants where 16,950 learners or about 88.89% passed the examination given at the end of each class.

“When we launched this program, we set a target of 10,000 graduates for 2016. But after only about seven months of implementation, we already reached the 15,000 mark. I am really glad that our financial literacy program is well-received by the public and many have shown interest and willingness to learn the topic. This only strengthens our determination to further thrust for financial inclusion among Filipinos,” Cebuana Lhuillier President and CEO Jean Henri Lhuillier said.

Reaching 514 communities, free CebuanAsenso Negoserye financial literacy classes were held in various barangays and the Department of Education Alternative Learning System centers all over the country. Each class is comprised of seven modules about financial management, educating participants about topics such as saving and debt management. The most number of graduates are from Mandaluyong City where over 200 individuals completed the one-day crash course.

Going beyond educating the participants, Cebuana Negosyo Starter Packs were also given out to top graduates of each area to encourage entrepreneurship. They each received a Cebuana Lhuillier 24k Loyalty Card, Php200 worth of e-money, and a Cebuana Lhuillier SIM Card. The Cebuana Lhuillier SIM is pre-installed with the Cebuana Lhuillier App, which allows the user to access remittance and e-load services. It also enables the user to view 24k loyalty points, check e-money balance, check online appraisal estimates, and view transaction history. The user can earn a profit of as much as 20% with online or SMS remittance transactions and 5% with e-load transactions.

“I hope that after having been educated on the importance of proper financial management through CebuanAsenso Negoserye, these Filipinos would better appreciate the value of having their finances in order and would feel empowered to take advantage of the various financial services and products made available to fit their individual needs,” Lhuillier said.

Cebuana Lhuillier employees, including company executives and the management committee, actively participated in the program as class teachers. In 2017, the company is set to partner with the Department of Social Welfare and Development to target 4Ps (Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program) beneficiaries as CebuanAsenso Negoserye learners.

Also, in the second goal to be pursued by Cebuana Lhuillier for the ALS learners in the DepEd – Cebuana Lhuillier ALS Community Learning Centers (which will total 66 nationwide before the end of 2016), Financial Literacy is one of the Five Important Functional Fields of Knowledge, along with Livelihood, Disaster Resiliency, ICT Competitiveness and Sports Development, where around 7,000 ALS learners will be empowered. Same empowerment will be pursued for all employees of the P.J. Lhuillier Group of Companies and their families, also totaling around 7,000.

“As one of the most trusted companies in the financial industry, it is really an honor to have Bayad Center as an addition to our list of remittance agents. This partnership will open new doors of opportunities for both of our businesses and will definitely provide our clients an added fast, easy, and safe option for their domestic remittance needs,” Cebuana Lhuillier President and CEO Jean Henri Lhuillier said during the partnership signing on September 19, 2016 at Makati City.

Known in the Philippines as a bills payment service provider, Bayad Center can now accommodate sending and receiving money remittance to and from any Cebuana Lhuillier branch in any part of the country.
