CLFI Pushes Education, Joins LCC’s National Literacy Conference

Staying true to its realigned mission to focus on education, Cebuana Lhuillier Foundation, Inc. (CLFI), in partnership with the Department of Education (DepEd), took part in this year’s National Literacy Conference. Conducted by the Literacy Coordinating Council (LCC), this momentous event was held at Teachers Camp, Baguio City on September 4 and 5.

With the theme “Literacy for Inclusive Growth”, the two-day event was highlighted by the presentation of winners of the Hall of Fame Award and the Special Award of Excellence in Literacy—the highest award conferred for the first time this year to two Local Government Units (LGUs). CLFI served as the benefactor of the cash component amounting to Php 200,000.00 each for the said award.

Davao City won the Hall of Fame Award, while the municipalities of Agoo, La Union and Tubungan, Iloilo bagged the Special Award of Excellence in Literacy as previous Hall of Famers (3-time first placers in the annual awards) who have proven sustainability of their winning programs for three years after winning the Hall of Fame awards. Responding to the heart-warming appreciation of the LCC Chairperson DepEd Undersecretary Rizalino Rivera, CLFI Executive Trustee and General Manager Atty. Cesar R. Vidal delivered an inspiring message after the awarding ceremony.

In his message, Atty. Vidal recounted how CLFI Chairman Ambassador Philippe Lhuillier and CLFI President and CEO Dr. Jean Henri Lhuillier readily approved the proposal to be the benefactor in the highest award on literacy. He shared that the Lhuilliers fully believe in the high importance of this program to our country and in our everyday life. Atty. Vidal also introduced to the delegates CLFI’s advocacy on education, one of which is its support to DepEd’s Alternative Learning System.

The conference was attended by 433 participants from the eight different sectors represented in the LCC — DepEd, Senate, House of Representatives, Department of Interior and Local Government, National Economic and Development Authority, Public Information Agency, Philippine Normal University, and Nongovernment Organization.

“Mother of Literacy” and LCC creator Senator Santanina Razul graced the event.

Lending a helping hand: CLFI conducts relief operations for Typhoon Maring victims

(CLFI), the corporate social responsibility arm of PJ Lhuillier Group of Companies, travelled all the way to Cavite and Laguna for a two-day relief operations on August 31 and September 1 respectively.

In partnership with the TV5 Alagang Kapatid Foundation, CLFI restored smiles on a total of 960 Caviteños in Barangay San Rafael 3 in Noveleta, and La Isla Bonita de Salinas in Rosario, Cavite on Saturday and a total of 974 beneficiaries from Barangay San Jose in Biñan and Brgy. Palingon in Calamba City, Laguna.

Cebuana Lhuillier foundation rebrands, puts up e-learning facility at PUP

IN a move to further provide better education opportunities to the Filipino youth, the PJ Lhuillier Foundation announced its transformation and rebranding at the launch of its e-learning facility at the Ninoy Aquino Library and Learning Resource Center (NALLRC) of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) main campus in Santa Mesa, Manila.

PJ Lhuillier Group of Companies (PJLGC) President and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Jean Henri Lhuillier said the change of name comes with the mandate to focus on education.

“In line with our corporate social responsibility efforts, we decided, with the blessing of my dad [Philippine Ambassador to Portugal Philippe Jones Lhuillier], to change the name of our PJ Lhuillier Foundation Inc. to Cebuana Lhuillier Foundation Inc. [CLFI]. This was a true effort to show that Cebuana Lhuillier means business in supporting education…in supporting those in need,” Lhuillier said.

At the launch of the facility, Lhuillier thanked PUP President Emmanuel de Guzman and expressed his gratitude to the university for being an “instrument to convey our advocacy that education is a right for everybody and is something that everyone should receive.”

“May this step be a launch pad for young minds to explore different fields of the academe, discover skills and venture out in the world of learning,” Lhuillier said.

The PUP-CLFI E-Learning Center, which is open to all PUP students, houses modern information-technology equipment with 21 units of desktop computers, all with UPS and Wi-Fi access, that will contain titles of over 400 select e-books all over the world.

The P2-million e-learning facility is equipped with complete sound system, concert speakers, wired microphones and microphone stands, control and equalizer. It is also furnished with two split-type air-conditioning units, an LCD projector with screen, emergency lights and four closed-circuit TV cameras.

Staffed by Cebuana Lhuillier personnel who will assist students in their research and studies, the e-learning center will provide a resource support for easy and conducive researching options for the CLFI scholars, PUP students and faculty.

All these, said Dr. Divina Pasumbal, PUP-NALLRC director, make the PUP-CLFI  E-Learning Center on a par with those in La Salle, Ateneo and UP Diliman.

“At this juncture, I want to thank the president for opening PUP’s doors to private partnerships because we really have to accept the fact that the government agencies direly need this private partnership,” Pasumbal said.

In return, Lhuillier was elated that the partnership was forged.

“I am happy that the [PUP administration] agreed to this public-private partnership. We definitely saw the need for PUP and I believe PUP also saw the need from their end for private support. More than anything, it is really a question of who needed support the most and we felt, the foundation felt, that PUP was that university,” Lhuillier said.

For his part, Ambassador Lhuillier said he is happy with the direction the foundation is going.

“Watching the foundation grow and become what it is today is one of the most beautiful things that have happened not only for Cebuana Lhuillier but also for the family of PJ Lhuillier. We firmly believe that education is the best weapon to overcome poverty and help the country push its potential,” he said.

“The CLFI aims to help our youth and push them to pursue studies, have them be an instrument of change and become inspiration to others. Cebuana Lhuillier Foundation Inc. will never tire of helping and handing service, especially to those who need it the most,” the ambassador said.

Unilever weighs plant relocation option

Unilever Philippines said that maintaining its operations in Paco, Manila will depend on the feasibility of the location and on the ordinance of the city government.

Chito Macapagal, Unilever vice president for business development, told reporters at the launch of the “Sachet Recovery Program” that any plan to relocate its plant from Paco is really a function of climate change.

“It depends on how long will it be feasible for us to stay in Paco and the ordinance of the city government of Manila,” Macapagal said. During the flooding caused by typhoon “Ondoy,” Unilever’s Paco facility, which straddles a river, was affected and work was suspended for three days as it has to ensure the safety of its workers.

Unilever has three other manufacturing facilities. It has two facilities for food manufacturing in Gateway Business Park in General Trias, Cavite and one plant in Mangahan, Pasig for Selecta Ice Cream.

“A city ordinance can kick us out and decision of the bosses,” said Macapagal.

Previously, the city government of Manila has been under pressure to implement a new zoning regulation that would reclassify the area along the Pasig River and Pandacan, which hosts the oil depots of oil firms, that would mean relocating the industrial firms in this area.

So far, there has been no direction from the new city leadership under Mayor Erap Estrada.

Meantime, Unilever expects to double the recovery of sachets of its products particularly Surf to 20 million to 25 million sachets this year from last year’s 10 million sachets.

Last year, the company was able to collect 4 million sachets of Surf alone.

The “Sachet Recovery Program” is a partnership with Smart Communications and Cebuana Lhuillier to recover Surf sachets in an effort towards greener living.

Under this program, end-users are encouraged to trade their empty Surf sachets in any of the 1,800 Cebuana Lhuillier branches nationwide in exchange for 25 Free texts. The sachets would then be recycled to become building blocks like cement pavers to be donated to 30 beneficiary public schools nationwide.

Smart and Cebuana Lhuillier will also aid Unilever in creating scale for its long-term sachet conversion capabilities such as the conversion into other useful items like construction boards and fuel. At least 170 kilos of sachets are needed to create 1,000 cement pavers.

Unilever Surf brand manager Benjie Yap said that Surf is the country’s number one detergent brand.

“We are growing very well,” he said adding the partnership with Smart and Cebuana Lhuillier is expected to further strengthen the brand’s awareness and market position.

Overall, Unilever Philippines chairman and president Peter Cowan said they are growing ahead of market. Both company officials refused to give exact sales and market share figures.

Yap further said they plan to include other Unilever products such as shampoos under this program, but for now this is only limited to Surf, which is a Unilver global brand.

Cebuana Lhuillier president and CEO Jean Henri Lhuillier noted that: “Not only does the Sachet Recovery Program address our challenges on waste, it also encourages Filipinos to take a positive action to have healthier surroundings.”

“Through the use of Smart SMS service as a means to reward customer participation in a worthwhile cause,” added Smart co-founder and chief wireless advisor Orlando B. Vea.
