PJLFI Spreads Love at GRACES

PJLFI Spreads Love at GRACES

The PJ Lhuillier Foundation, Inc. and its Metro Manila scholars

On February 14, PJ Lhuillier Foundation, Inc. (PJLFI) proved that Valentine’s Day is not just about couples but it is a celebration of love in all forms. PJLFI and its Metro Manila scholars spread love among the lolos and lolas of the Golden Reception and Action Centers for the Elderly and Other Special Cases (GRACES).

This annual Valentine activity brought joy and revived the youthful days of the senior citizens of GRACES as the team gave out roses and gifts while serenading them with wonderful love songs. It was an afternoon full of entertainment, sweet treats, gift-giving, raffles, sumptuous snacks and broad smiles from everyone.

GRACES, a project of DSWD, was launched last year. Located in Quezon City, it houses a total of 133 elders, almost sixty percent of which are bed-ridden.

Portugal Program Can Benefit Filipinos

MANILA, Philippines — Many Filipinos stand to benefit from a program launched by Portugal to allow foreign nationals to obtain residence permits and own property and businesses.

Dubbed the Golden Residence Permit (GRP) program, it aims to help immigrants to legally own property as a residence or for business.

Philippine Ambassador to Portugal Philippe J. Lhuillier said the GRP program will help Filipinos legalize their stay and open more possibilities for their growth in Portugal.

Lhuillier said a Portuguese residence permit entitles holders to travel to any of the 26 European states in the Schengen area.

The Schengen Area comprises the territories of twenty-six European countries that have implemented the Schengen Agreement, signed in the town of Schengen, Luxembourg in 1985.

The Schengen Area operates as a single international travel and immigration area with no border controls for people travelling between Schengen countries and only external border controls for those travelling in and out of the area.

Five years of continuous eligibility in the program can lead to the acquisition of a permanent residence permit, while six years can help the holder acquire a Portuguese citizenship. The GRP program also allows the application for family reunification.

Philippine Ambassador Meets with AICEP Executive

Ambassador Philippe J. Lhuillier poses  with Mr. Pedro Pessoa e Costa, Executive Administrator of AICEP during his visit to the agency´s headquarters in Lisbon last 6 February 2013

13 February 2013 – Philippine Ambassador to the Portuguese Republic Philippe J. Lhuillier paid a courtesy call on Mr. Pedro Pessoa e Costa, Executive Administrator of the Agencia Para o Investimento e Comércio Externo de Portugal (AICEP), Portugal´s Trade and Investment Agency in its headquarters in Lisbon on 6 February 2013.

In their meeting, Mr. Pessoa explained to the Ambassador that AICEP is integrated within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs which facilitates its wide presence in 74 countries either within the embassies or as independent offices. The agency is manned by a workforce of more than 200 professionals conducting market research and identification of business opportunities for Portuguese companies.

Ambassador Lhuillier pointed to the improved business climate in the Philippines with investor confidence steadily rising as proven by the country´s improved credit ratings since the beginning of the Aquino administration with the latest result just one notch below investment grade. With a population exceeding 95 million, the country´s large consumer base presents an attractive come-on for potential investors.

Mr. Pessoa acknowledged the growing importance of the East in the global state of economic affairs and his country´s desire to find alternative markets for its products and services. The Ambassador encouraged Portuguese companies to take advantage of the Philippine’s liberalized investment and incentive policies. He requested AICEP´s assistance in relaying the Embassy´s invitation for Portuguese businessmen and entrepreneurs to attend the annual Manila FAME.
In order to increase the level of trade between Portugal and the Philippines, the two officials agreed to conduct more business matching activities including the possibility of exchange visits of business delegations within the year.

Created in 2007, AICEP is focused on encouraging foreign companies to invest in Portugal and promote the export activities of Portuguese companies including the enhancement of their presence overseas. Aside from promoting a competitive business environment, AICEP aims to serve as a one-stop-shop agency for prospective investors and buyers of Portuguese services and products.

Ambassador Lhuillier supports Portugal’s Golden Residence Permit Program

Keeping in mind his vision and commitment to be an effective channel between the Philippines and Portugal, Ambassador Philippe J. Lhuillier supports the launch of the Golden Residence Permit program (GRP) of the Portuguese government. Major changes to the legal rules on the entry and stay of foreign nationals have been adapted in this program, allowing them to obtain a Portuguese residence permit provided that they pursue certain investments individually or through a company.

This new development in the immigration policy is considered beneficial for Filipinos by the Philippine Embassy in Lisbon. Having a Portuguese residence permit entitles holders to travel to any of the 26 European states in the Schengen area and more importantly, 5 years of continuous eligibility in the program creates an opportunity to acquire a permanent residence permit and Portuguese citizenship after an additional one year. In addition, GRP holders may also apply for family reunification.

To be eligible for the GRP program, the non-EU national must be involved in investment activities in Portugal for a minimum period of 5 years. This would include capital transfers with a value equal to or above 1 million Euros, creation of at least 30 job positions or acquisition of real estate with a value equal to or above 500,000 Euros.

Submission of applications may be filed at any Portuguese Embassy or Consulate to be forwarded to the Portuguese Immigration and Border Service (SEF). Interested foreign nationals may also apply online at http://ari.sef.pt.

Through the Golden Residence Permit program, Philippine Ambassador to Portugal Philippe J. Lhuillier is optimistic that this is a great advantage for Filipinos to legalize their permanence and has opened up possibilities for further growth in the country of Portugal.
